Agrigento
Buon giorno! We arrived at Agrigento and the Valley of the Temples. What an amazing view driving past the Temples and seeing them on the ridge above us! We couldn't wait to get up close.
Did you know that these Greek Temples were built around the 5th century BC? The Temple of Concord is considered the best-preserved Doric temple in Sicily. All Sicilian temples are in the Doric style. Doric means that they have fat columns and a simple capital or top. It was really amazing to see all these great temples in one location. |
Our last stop of the day is Segesta to view its theater and Doric temple. Segesta's theater is situated on a hill that is about 100 meters higher than the temple. The theater is almost perfectly preserved. It was probably built in first half of the third century. It could host some 3,000 to 3,500 people.
Segesta's claim to fame is its unfinished Doric temple, which is one of Europe's best-preserved ancient monuments. The temple was built in the 5th century BC. |
Alfio, grazie for the great Sicily tour!
All good things must end and so our Rick Steve's tour must also end.
But the traveling doesn't have to end. We are now reviewing Rick's tour material to see what our next adventure will be.
Grazie for joining us and we hope to see you on our next tour.
